Bofors Gun -Ex Navy Cadets

This gun was removed from T.S. Vancouver during December 2003 because it was unsightly and unsafe, badly rusted and bits falling off. On March 2005 ,Job Futures started a W.F.D. project to restore it.

The gun was stripped with difficulty because of corrosion and build up of old paint and debris. Most parts could only be moved after heating and a fair bit of force.  First to be got going was the turntable. The 144 ball bearings and associated races were rusted but re-usable. The turntable was cleaned, treated then painted, greased and reassembled.

The only way to repair the badly rusted yoke was to cut the worst section off and replace it with a new section which was built.  Removing the barrel proved difficult because it was jammed about 30mm back from it's normal "at rest" position, and also it was rusted solid wherever it contacted other parts. However when removed and cleaned up it proved to be in quite good condition, with the crest of the order of the Garter clearly marked on top. (click to enlarge images)
