Fighting for fencing recognition - Written 08.03.06 09.20 by Webmaster
THE rise in popularity of fencing in Albany has been marked by the presentation of a new award.

WA Fencing will now present the Albany Fencing Club Award for Regional Fencing Champion annually, with local boy Gareth Daniel taking out the inaugural prize.
Daniel, 16, has been fencing for two years and has had a rapid rise through the ranks.

The left-handed fencer competed at competitions throughout last year and has developed a passion for the sport.

"It's similar to sword fighting and I had always wanted to try that," Daniel said.
"I tried it and have really enjoyed it, there's just something about it."

Daniel said he is considering taking the sport further but that would mean a move to Perth, which would allow him to compete in a greater number of tournaments.
There are 10 fencing clubs in Perth with Belmont City College the centre of excellence.

State treasurer Eric Ripper has become the patron for the sport in WA as it continues to grow.

Albany Fencing Club president Janet Ullinger said it is also starting to find its feet in country areas.

"We have between 10 and 20 fencers in the country although that number can fluctuate," Ullinger said.

"We should have a great deal more in the future after I introduced it to more than 300 school kids last year.

"There's a growing interest in it here and more people in the city are taking interest in what we're doing," she said. The Great Southern Duel, held last year, proved a success with even more people expected to visit this year's event.

Broome is looking to set up its own fencing club and Ullinger hopes other regional centres will develop the sport to create some country competitions in the future.

WA International Fencing competition - Written 22.09.05 09.50 by Webmaster
ALBANY has made a big impression on the world's fencing community with an excellent performance at the WA International Fencing competition held at the Kingsway International Stadium in Perth recently. Sending a team of five, three competed against the best Australia has to offer as well a former Olympian and Singapore national.

"We were the underdogs," Albany Fencing Club's Janet Ullinger said. "We had fun though and it was just a great experience to be around so many excellent fencers." "Being able to mix with people from around the world was fantastic and we made a lot of friends by the end of the week," she said.

Ullinger said the quality of the fencers in this competition were a cut above the rest but winning was not the point of the trip. "We got our butts kicked but it didn't matter because we all learnt so much," she said. "The two of us who didn't compete volunteered and enjoyed the insight they got. "Everyone was warm and welcoming and offered some great advice." Albany is the first country fencing club to compete at the competition and has now achieved a national ranking.

"It means we will have some credibility in fencing circles and it will lift our profile," Ullinger said. Many of the Perth clubs have pledged to visit Albany next year and take part in the Great Southern Duel, which will make the event even bigger than it was this year. Albany Fencing Club are currently looking for sponsors to assist their competitors in attending future events.

State's top swords duel in Albany - Written 22.09.05 09.15 by Webmaster
SOME of the State's finest fencers travelled to Albany this long weekend to take part in the Great Southern Duel.
They did battles battle in a variety of different categories including the foil and the sabre across three days at North Albany Senior High School.

Part of the visiting party was the State Development Officer Stephen Clarke who was in Albany to help out with the event and watch the talent of local fencers.
He said the standard is very good and that the Albany club is important to the sport in Western Australia.
"Albany is the jewel in the crown of our regional program," Clarke said.

Albany has a total of 30 members and is the only non‑metropolitan fencing club in the state.
Clubs from Shenton and UWA were here take part in some quality fencing competition while providing support for Albany.
Part of the event is to publicise the sport of fencing and get people interested in becoming involved.

WA Fencing vice president Peter Harbin said the duel was an excellent opportunity for all involved.
"It brings people to Albany and it fence against someone different and find out where they are," Harbin said.
Harbin holds a national veterans title and said the sport is constantly growing.

He said with the explosion of senior citizen sport it is an ideal activity.
His son Piers Harbin was also in Albany to take part
Piers is a state level representative and at the end of the current school term will head to Sydney.
From there he would like to take the sport as far as possible and said the Olympics would be a huge achievement.

He currently enjoys the fitness and social aspects of the sport but given that it is one of the oldest Olympic sports there is enormous opportunity for young local fencers.

Fencing chiefs expel referee for miss-scoring - Written 23.08.04 13.06 by Webmaster
ATHENS, Greece - Fencing chiefs expelled a Hungarian referee from the Olympics and banned him for two years on Sunday after he miss-scored the men’s team foil final and possibly cost China the gold.

Joszef Hidasi wrongly awarded winners Italy six points instead of China who went on to lose 45-42 in Saturday’s gold medal decider, governing body (FIE) spokesman Jochen Faerber told Reuters on Sunday.

It was the second case of a points error involving medals at the Olympics. Errors in gymnastics scoring cost South Korean Yang Tae-young a gold, which went to American Paul Hamm.
The Chinese fencing team, though, have indicated they will not appeal this result.

Faerber would not speculate on whether the miss-marking cost China the fencing gold, since Italy could have changed their tactics during the final to accommodate the marking.

Zagunis makes fencing history with sabre gold - Written 23.08.04 13.01 by Webmaster
ATHENS -- American fencer Mariel Zagunis defeated China's Tan Xue 15-9 for the gold medal in women's individual sabre Tuesday evening at the Helliniko Olympic Complex.

Zagunis will go down as the first gold medallist in the history of Olympic women's individual sabre, which made its debut in these Games.

Tuesday marked the first time the U.S. has won a medal in the 80-year history of Olympic women's fencing. Sada Jacobson's 15-7 bronze medal victory over Catalina Gheorghitoaia of Romania preceded Zagunis' gold and made the achievement that much sweeter.

Zagunis' gold medal in sabre is the first for an American woman.
It's also the first time the U.S. has won a fencing medal at all since 1984, when Peter Westbrook won bronze in men's sabre.

Zagunis, whose parents rowed for the United States at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, navigated some rough seas to reach the Athens Games.

ATHENS, Greece - Brice Guyart gave France their first gold medal in the fencing at the Athens Olympics when he beat the Italian Salvatore Sanzo 15-13 to take the men’s individual foil on Monday.

Italy’s Andrea Cassara, the world number one going into the tournament, had to make do with bronze, coming from 8-11 down to beat Renal Ganeev of Russia 15-12.

In a heated final which saw both players warned for foul play, Guyart quickly trailed 0-4 but he levelled the scores at 5-5 from which stage the fencers went point for point to the finish.

It was Guyart’s second Olympic gold; he was a member of the French team that triumphed in Sydney four years ago.

“I can’t believe what I have accomplished here. I had to work very hard in two matches to win the final,” he said.

“I had to work four years to improve my technical ability and my physical strength.”
